Jan. '09 Kid's Dental Health Month & Orthodontics

Kids, Dental Health and Orthodontics

One of the questions I hear most from my patients who are parents is, “When should I bring my child for his/her first appointment?” The American Dental Association recommends that a child visit the family dentist by his or her first birthday, while baby teeth are emerging.

With early, regular dental care, we can keep your child’s teeth healthy and strong with such proactive, preventive measures such as sealants and instructions on oral hoome care.  I canalso make you aware of any concerns about how the teeth and jaw are developing. But more importantly, we may be able to take steps during early development to avoid the need for orthodontics down the road.

If I detect problems that we cannot correct, I can refer you to an orthodontist. Children should have an orthodontic check-up no later than age 7. By then, your child’s teeth have developed enough to where subtle problems with jaw growth and emerging teeth can be diagnosed.

If your child does require orthodontics, regular dental care becomes more important than ever.  To ensure your child’s teeth stay healthy while in braces, he or she should have regular dental check-ups and cleanings. Professional cleanings can help keep teeth free of plaque and decay, so when the braces are removed, a healthy, straight smile is the result.

  Have a great day!
