April '09 Frequent Cleanings

Frequent Cleanings.

They Can Save Your Teeth.
And Maybe Your Life.

You’ve always known how important it is to have your teeth cleaned. Professional cleanings remove plaque and bacteria, restoring your teeth to a healthy, clean shine. If you also have a fluoride treatment, your teeth are better protected from decay. Plus, these check-ups allow us to monitor your oral health, detecting any problems while they’re small and fixing them quickly, before they can become major problems.

Now there’s an even more compelling reason to commit to regular hygiene visits: your life.

Dentists have long suspected a link between oral health and whole body health. Now we have proof.

Studies published in the New England Journal of Medicine and the Journal of Periodontology report that the inflammatory effects from periodontal (gum) disease can cause bacterial byproducts to enter the bloodstream and trigger the liver to make proteins such as C-reactive protein.

This protein is one of the main markers in all kinds of systemic inflammation that can increase the risk of blood clots and, according to a new study from Harvard, pancreatic cancer.

This bacterial infection has also been linked to health problems for pregnant women, leading to premature and low birth weight babies, as well as in increased risk of stroke, heart attack and complications in diabetes.

Periodontal disease is also the leading cause of tooth loss. Studies show that those who lose their teeth have higher medical expenses and fewer years of life. Missing teeth can lead to nutritional deficiencies and jaw misalignment. This misalignment can cause everything from migraines to ringing in the ears and tingling fingertips.

More than 85 percent of people have some level of periodontal or gum disease and often, there are no symptoms of the disease. It can only be detected through your regular hygiene appointments.

With this new information regarding the serious complications associated with gum disease, we recommend having regular check-ups and cleanings between 3 and 4 times a year. It’s that important.

At my practice, we think in terms of prevention and use advanced training and technology to diagnose and treat periodontal disease before it becomes a major threat to your health.  We use a variety of new technologies that make the non-surgical treatment of this disease more thorough and much less painful than ever before.

Most importantly, gum disease is treatable, even at an advanced stage, to help you keep your teeth – and your health – in top shape.

So, if you have your hygiene appointment scheduled, good for you! And if you haven’t been in for a cleaning for a while, make an appointment soon. It’s never been more important to keep you teeth and gums healthy.
