Every now and again, when I meet someone for the first time and introduce myself, I hear, “Oh, you’re the cosmetic dentist!”
While it is very nice to be known as the cosmetic dentist in the area, I am quick to let people know that in my practice, I offer much more than beautiful smiles. As a matter of fact, my dental practice is quite comprehensive. From general dentistry for the whole family to restorative dentistry and TMJ care, I pretty much do it all. . . checkups, cleanings, tooth-colored fillings, porcelain crowns, ceramic inlays and onlays, bridges, veneers, whitening, the list goes on and on.
I think the word “comprehensive” is key. That’s another thing I hear from new patients. They tell me that they are tired of going to the dentist for one problem, only to hear that the dentist has uncovered yet another problem that requires yet another visit. They feel like they never got the big picture.
I approach things differently. On a patient’s first visit, I do a comprehensive exam assisted by advanced technology. This technology (such as digital x-rays, intra-oral cameras and the DIAGNOdent laser cavity detector) is so sensitive and so accurate, I can find problems at their earliest stages. Most of these problems would go undetected by traditional x-rays. I then present all of my findings to the patient. Full disclosure. Then together, we develop a treatment plan that works within their budget, schedule and personal goals to achieve optimal oral health. I call it dentistry with “no surprises.” And I find that my patients really appreciate the honesty.
So, the next time you hear my name and think, “Oh, he’s the cosmetic dentist in town!” Remember. I’m the “comprehensive dentist” in town!
